DO DIFFERENT SEASONS INFLUENCE OUR READING?

Updated: Sep 25

What is seasonal reading?

It refers to the practice of adjusting the type of books you read based on the current season. Seasons can influence your mood, health, and overall well-being. You may have noticed a change in your mood from the warmest to the coldest times of the year. Typically, people feel more carefree and open to adventure in the summer, while the long winter months tend to foster quieter, more introspective moods. It's worth considering whether these seasonal shifts also impact your reading choices.

Living somewhere the seasons change dramatically can heighten our awareness of the passage of time and the shifting rhythms of nature. As the world outside transforms, so too do our internal landscapes, and we find ourselves drawn to different genres and themes in our reading. Fiction, with its endless variety, offers us a way to escape and be entertained, no matter the weather or the length of the day.

Summer beckons with its promise of beach reads romance novels, and lighthearted adventures adorning everyone’s shelves. These captivating stories offer perfect escapism for warm days. Conversely, winter invites us to delve into weightier tomes, brimming with darker themes and intricate plot lines. They are best enjoyed while nestled next to a crackling fireplace or cocooned under a cosy blanket with a steaming cup of hot chocolate. As autumn arrives, these seasonal reads seamlessly transition into the captivating world of cosy mysteries, guiding us from the lightness of summer to the depth of winter reads.

Bookshops often adjust their offerings to match the mood of the season, aiming to keep people engaged in reading year-round. As people spend more time outdoors during the warmer seasons, they may prefer lighter books that are easier to carry. On the other hand, during colder months when people tend to stay indoors, they may opt for heavier, more immersive series. Additionally, the genre of books in demand also changes with the seasons. In winter, readers may be more interested in intense and gripping stories, possibly as a way to escape the lack of sunlight.
